Peter Webster
Euphonium

Like many of us I played the trumpet throughout high school in marching, concert and dance bands and in a drum and bugle corps. Then I took a fifty year "vacation" for college and a working career in accounting, Finance Corp, US Army, banks and Xerox.

At the urging of a skiing buddy, Chuck Dittmar, I picked up the trumpet again five years ago, switching to the baritone horn this year. My musical heritage comes from my grandfather Max Zach. He emigrated from Vienna, at age 20, arriving in this country in 1885 with 40 other musicians including Max Fiedler (father of Arthur). A viola player, he and the others became the core of the Boston Symphony. Max Zach went on to conduct the Boston Pops at the turn of the century and later became the conductor of the St. Louis Symphony from 1906 to 1921 where he died of an abscessed tooth for lack of penicillin. I wish I'd known him.

I enjoy playing with my ten-year-old grandson in TubaChristmas outdoors in downtown Boston between Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market.
